With so many pale and interesting shades on the spectrum, how do you find ‘the one’? Looking at a colour chart, it’s often tricky to choose between one white hue and another, let alone work out which shade will bring out the best in your space. There’s no such thing as the ‘wrong’ colour of course – it’s all down to what mood or look you want to create. Our colour experts Marianne Shillingford and Rebecca Williamson give you their edit of the best whites, to suit your style and space.

For a light and airy feel

‘Cool-toned or clean whites such as Absolute White create a crisp fresh look, which helps to make a small space look and feel much bigger,‘ says Rebecca. Use it as a backdrop to show off your favourite accessories and personal objects.

For a warm and cosy mood

‘To create a cosy feel, go for whites which contain subtle hints of gold such as Timeless and Jasmine White. These shades have the power to banish even the dullest weather outside by creating a warm glow indoors,’ notes Marianne. Use these shades in spaces that have lots of hard surfaces to add a touch of softness, such as the bathroom.

For high traffic areas

‘For the busiest parts of your home like the hall, stairs and landing, use a white that is 20 times tougher than standard emulsion so you can easily clean off dirty marks and don’t have to paint so often. Try warm natural whites like Nutmeg White or Almond White from our Easycare range to create a really warm welcome everyone will love,’ suggests Marianne.

For creating more space

‘Using our Light+Space paints is a clever trick for making a small, dark space look bigger and brighter. It contains Lumitec technology, which reflects twice as much light than a standard emulsion, so it’s a great choice for awkward spots of the home such as lofts or tight spaces. It comes in a palette of delicate pastel shades, so you needn’t always stick strictly to white,’ Rebecca explains.
